Fundraising Event for Nehru Children's Museum, Kolkata

On October 3rd and 4th, Bengalees of New England (BNE) and Maitreyee Chakraborty are partnering in a 2 days fundraising event for the Nehru Children's' Museum, an iconic institution located in Chowringhee, Kolkata. Standing tall for 47 years, it was established on Nov 14th 1972, the birthday of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, by Sri Jugal Srimal whose dream was to impart education to children through informal learning. It houses a large collection of dolls from 88 countries, a collection of Ganesha statues, a toy gallery and a collection of cars. It's greatest attraction, however, is its narration of the epics,The Ramayana and The Mahabharata, depicted with clay figurines of Krishnanagar.

The museum has been a pioneer in children's education for the last 25 years. It has 1400+ students who take classes, workshops and attend competitions in singing, dancing, painting and drama. It also gives special scholarships to children who are physically and financially challenged.

Since March 2020, the children's activities have come to a halt because of Covid and the institution is going through a severe financial crisis. The fundraising event is an attempt to save the museum and keep its doors open until the lock down is over.
