In the memory of Syamalendu Narayan Chaudhuri

Syamalendu (known as Syamal) Narayan Chaudhuri passed away on August 7th, 2022, after a long illness. He was 79 years old.

He received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata and master’s in environmental engineering from Northeastern University, Boston, subsequently qualified as Professional Engineer, He worked as Superintendent for Department of Public Works in Burlington, MA.

He was the beloved husband of Patricia Chaudhuri (Backus), and loving father of Ananda Narayan and his wife Kathy Fernando of New York, Anamika and her husband Patrick Reed of Connecticut and proud grandfather of Matteo Fernando, Marcus Fernando, Josie Leela and Sydney Florence Reed.

A highly motivated and energetic person, Syamal thoroughly enjoyed his job, always doing his best for the Town of Burlington, MA. A family-oriented person, fun loving and affectionate by nature Syamal was ever helpful to everybody around him. He loved kids and was an avid animal lover. His big heart, loving and caring nature, his generosity had endeared him to family, friends and all those who came in touch with him. He loved throwing parties. His Thanksgiving parties with 40 plus people worth remembering. 

Syamal was very close to his sister Swati Bhattacherya and her son Shayan and his brother Late Subrata (Rajat) and Bubu’s Children Sohini and Arnab.

Syamal was a naturally gifted politician. He took an active interest youth politics back home. Syamal was also instrumental in starting Saraswati Pujo in Beleghata, Kolkata at very young age, That Pujo is still celebrated today.

He was always there for BNE when and where they needed him.

Syamal was also survived by his elder sister and brother-in-law, sisters-in-laws and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A visitation will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington, MA 01803, on Monday, August 22, from 11am - 1pm. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Café Escadrille, 26 Cambridge St., Burlington at 1:30 pm for a celebration of Syamal’s life.
